9. Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress
United States - 1935
One of the most popular aircraft of all time, Boeing’s four-engine behemoth was nearly canceled before the US entered the war. Nonetheless it went on to become the workhorse of the 8th Air Force and the iconic US bomber of the war. Renowned for its toughness, the “Fort” proved to be the plane that could brave the flak, weather the vicious fighter attacks, drop the bombs, and bring the men home. Today the B-17 remains a beloved symbol of America’s war effort. Here is a model of "Outhouse Mouse", a B-17G of the 91st Bomb Group that completed an amazing 139 missions.
