2. Battle of Poland - Sep. 1, 1939
Near the Brda River, Poland

The Start of World War Two

At 4 in the morning on September 1, 1939 the German Army began moving into Poland, kicking off the most destructive and deadliest conflict the world has ever known.  Having massed some 1.5 million troops and 2,500 tanks, German units were within Warsaw in eight days, though Polish forces fought valiantly.  With his eastern flank now secure, Hitler began to look to the west.  Shown here is the moment German tank forces begin the drive east, moving through the wreckage of war that would become all too common.
