6. Vickers Wellington
Great Britain - 1936

Known affectionately by such nicknames as the "Cloth Bomber" and "Wimpy", the British Wellington was the only British bomber to have been produced throughout the entire war.  Famous for its unique geodetic construction that made use of cloth covering a framework of criss-crossed strips of metal, the Wellington's airframe was flexible yet very strong.  Depicted here is the bomber that Sgt. James Ward famously helped save on the night of July 7, 1941.  His aircraft was returning home from a mission over Germany when it was set on fire by an enemy fighter.  With a rope tied around him he climbed out a window onto the wing and helped extinguish a burning engine by stuffing a tarp into the area, earning himself a Victoria Cross in the process.
