7. Douglas TBD Devastator
United States - 1935

One of the most advanced aircraft in the world when it entered service in 1937, the Douglas Devastator was nonetheless obsolete by the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor.  The carrier-based torpedo bomber was still in front-line squadrons in June of 1942 however, and while the Battle of Midway was an epic victory for the Navy - the TBD squadrons were virtually wiped out.  Here is the Devastator flown by LCDR John Waldron, leader of Torpedo Squadron 8, which flew from the USS Hornet on that fateful morning of June 4th, 1942.
